A free verse poem
Gifts are everywhere —-
From a note received from a friend
To waterfall or forest images from a special photographer
To a knowing glance, a shared moment of laughter
Even the moments when you sarcastically exclaim, ‘Well now, that’s a fine how-do-you-do,’ or ‘Bless your heart.’
Gifts are everywhere —-
From a good book you just can’t put down
To the utility commission finally acknowledging your complaint
To a sprinkling of warm weather in the midst of winter (hope it doesn’t mess up the flowers’ schedule)
Even that weird dream or an espied frown
All of it can be turned upside down so that it’s right side up
And were I to give out gifts of my own this day —
I’d wrap up patience, tactfulness, laughter, and routine
Those things I like to think of as the glue for everything
And I’d like to add some BS too
No, not the kind that’s in your mind
Rather BS as in baking soda
It’s a great neutralizing agent, helps with digestion, and does lots of other things too
Like cleaning, baking, brightening, and it gets rid of odors to boot
Baking soda IS a fine how-do-you-do gift if you ask me
The other gift I’d give is a special wish that in this day you might find just one thing —
A gift that you can cherish, even for a moment, or one that makes you smile or sing
Or makes you breathe a deep sigh of relief, or grin a grin of delight
Those joyful moments in time when everything seems right
So, take the gift each day has to offer, enjoy, then let it go
No need to stockpile
For tomorrow will bring another gift to light
Because truly, my friends,
**** Gifts are everywhere ****
